The short answer
An llms.txt file is a plain summary of your site for AI tools. It's harmless and cheap to add, but Google says it ignores it and most AI crawlers rarely ask for it. Don't pay anyone to sell it as a fix.
llms.txt is a proposed standard: a Markdown file at the root of your site (yoursite.com.au/llms.txt) that summarises who you are and links to your most important pages, written for AI tools rather than people.
Does it help?
Not much, on current evidence.
- Google ignores it. Google's guidance on AI features says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- AI crawlers rarely ask for it. Log data reported in 2026 found around 97% of llms.txt files received no requests at all over a month, even as the number of sites with one grew almost ninefold.
So why do we have one?
Because it costs nothing, it's generated automatically every time we publish, and it does no harm. You can read ours. If AI tools start using it more, we're ready.
We just won't pretend it's the reason anyone shows up in ChatGPT.
What to do instead
What actually affects AI visibility is less exciting: let the right crawlers in, get indexed in Bing, answer questions clearly on your pages, and build reviews and mentions. Our AI search page covers each one.
